Frequently asked questions

Question not listed? The wiki covers every system in detail.

What is Prototype?

An original low-poly medieval sandbox. You shape the land, gather materials with a quality from 1 to 100, craft tools and raise buildings, survive hunger, thirst and cold, specialise in capped skills and fight with directional combat. Prototype is the name of the project; its working title was Erfgrond.

When is it coming out?

There is no release date yet. The game is at step 18 of 21: the release candidate. After that come packaging, hosting and Steam. Follow along on the roadmap.

Which platform?

PC, via Steam. The dedicated server also runs on Linux.

How many players can play together?

Solo, or up to eight players together. Eight is the target the game is being built for. A server admin can set the maximum anywhere between 1 and 64, but nothing above eight is promised.

Can I play solo?

Yes. Solo, the game runs as a server on your own PC, and you can open that world up to friends later.

Can I run my own server?

Yes. There are server builds for Windows and Linux, a Pterodactyl egg, a Dockerfile and a systemd example. See Host a server.

Is there PvP?

PvP is off by default. Each in-game day can bring a Judgement Hour, by default from 19:00 to 01:00 game time, when PvP and sieges are open. Servers can also switch PvP fully on or off. See PvP & Judgement Hour.

How big is the world?

3072 by 3072 metres, ringed by ocean. The island has six regions and a swamp at its heart. See The world.

Can I learn everything?

No, and that is the point. You have 500 points for crafting and 450 for combat. So you choose what you become, and you need other players for the rest.

What happens when I die?

Your gravestone stays for 30 minutes. You respawn with half hunger and thirst and are Weakened for 5 minutes. You lose 3% of your skill XP.

Do my buildings stay standing?

Yes, even after a restart. Outside a claim they slowly decay if you do not maintain them. Inside a clan claim they do not.

Is the world made of voxels?

No. The surface is a heightfield of 2 by 2 metre tiles that you can lower and raise in 10 cm steps. Beneath it you can dig real tunnels, across multiple levels.

Are the images on this site real?

The screenshots, trailer footage and 3D models come straight from the game. The painterly key art (such as the main menu and the blacksmith) is mood illustration for menus and the Steam page.

Which engine does the game use?

Godot 4.7 with Jolt Physics. Models are made in Blender.
